No BSE found in organic livestock production

"Consumers concerned about food safety are choosing organically produced meat and produce in increasing numbers," states Janine Gibson, President of Canadian Organic Growers. Organic meat is a true alternative for families concerned about feeding their children meat that may carry Mad Cow Disease. The health and safety of our food supply depends on standards that emphasize localized production, traceability of both feed and meat, and humane treatment of animals," Gibson says.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, commonly referred to as Mad Cow Disease) came on the heels of the dramatic increase in the use of animal protein - rendered meat and bone meal left over from the slaughterhouse - in commercial livestock feed in recent decades. A single teaspoon of ingested high infectivity meat and bone meal is thought to be enough to cause BSE in a cow, the British medical journal The Lancet reported in 1996. The Soil Association, Britain's organic organization, reports that no BSE has ever been found on an organic farm in the UK.

Also, some international research is indicating magnesium and copper imbalances, caused either through management practices or environmental contamination, may lead to BSE prion formation. Small-scale, organic livestock farms minimize these problems through promoting environmental balance.

Organic meat is produced from animals that have been raised on a pure organic diet - nothing but organic feed and pasture. This means they are never fed rendered animal by-products that could have been contaminated with Mad Cow Disease. Nor are animals fed any genetically-engineered ingredients, antibiotics, hormones in beef production, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or synthetic fertilizers. In addition, animals are provided free access to outdoor pasture.

Organic agriculture is the only production practice that requires third-party certification and an annual on-site inspection and audit. This "audit trail" goes well beyond Canada's standard for meat production. Canadian Organic Growers, together with the Canadian Organic Livestock Association and the Organic Trade Association, believe the Canadian Food Inspection Association (CFIA) should adopt the Certified Organic Inspection System for all livestock production.( Ms Gibson, the President of Canadian Organic Growers Inc., was a chief collaborator in the development of Canada's National Standards for Organic Livestock Production and trains Organic Inspectors Internationally.)

Canadian Organic Growers is Canada's national information network for organic farmers, gardeners and consumers.

The Organic Trade Association represents all sectors of the organic industry throughout North America.
The Canadian Organic Livestock Association markets certified organic meat products.
